WILD WONDERS OF EUROPE

May 12 2010

Wild Wonders of Europe is a fantastic initiative for showing the beauty of European nature. Sponsored by National Geographic, 69 European wildlife photographers were send out on 125 missions to 48 European countries to spend more than 1.000 days in the field.

From May 27 to August 30, the city of The Hague will see the World Premiere of Wild Wonders of Europe. A hundred extra-large nature photos wil be on show in a free outdoor exposition that will tour throughout Europe.

Ruben Smit, a well known Dutch wildlife photographer, got the assignment to go Serbia in May 2009 to photograph all sorts of creepy crawlies, in particular the European pond turtle. This being not the most easy assignment, a good wildlife expert can be very helpful in such a case. So who can you call? Right, here is where Jeroen Verhoeff came in!

WILD WONDERS OF SERBIA, PART 1

Last May 2009

Off course I took some photographs myself too on this assignment. Maybe they are not as wonderful as those of Ruben Smit, but still, I love to show them to you.

We started in Gorne Podunavlje in the Upper Danube delta, bordering Croatia and Hungary. Here beautiful flooded forests full off black poplars, oaks and willows stand majestically in the dropping Danube waters. They are the perching place for dozens of white tailed eagles and black storks.

WILD WONDERS OF SERBIA, PART 2

Last May 2009

These food rich forests are home of numerous roe deer, red deer and wild boar. It is a spectacular sight watching them wading, swimming and walking through and alongside the water, especially when they have young with them. While photographing the scenery, suddenly a pine marten hopped into view and went about its way very relaxedly: a fantastic sight. Three times I saw a golden jackal: what a beautiful animal! Like a small, richly coloured wolf.

WILD WONDERS OF SERBIA, PART 3

Last May 2009

Locals warned us about a lethal disease in the water and Ruben was bitten by a common Leech (Hirudo officinalis) when photographing a water lilly, but I went snorkeling several times anyway. And oh my, was it worth it! Schools of bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus), pumpkinseeds (Lepomis gibbosus) and rudd came close to investigate me. A very cool water stick insect (ranatra linearis) peddled along the watersurface. When I felt an itch on my cheeck it turned out to be this two inch long larva of a silver water beetle (hydrous piceus).
