‘The silent ones’

  • 'The silent ones', orca painting Jeroen Verhoeff.

  • A group of ‘transients’ or ‘Bigg’s orcas’ greets another group. This type of orca hunts marine mammals such as seals, dolphins and whales. They do so in silence, because dolphins, whales and seals can hear very well. They live in very small family groups, often only three individuals. But sometimes they gather in large groups for socializing. Here a curious niece looks at a new pup from another group that is swimming next to her mother. Big brother stays close, because they prefer to stay with their mother forever. Passing on family ties and life lessons is so important for orcas that the females live a long time after they are no longer fertile, just like in humans.
