‘Circling’

  • 'Circling', sailfish and baitball painting Jeroen Verhoeff..

A small gang of sailfish circle around a baitball. A moment before they herded these Pacific sardines from the depths to the surface where these scared fish formed into a tight ball. Now in turn the sailfish will pass close by while they flash their lightning colours and their huge dorsal fins. Then they will charge into the sardines, guided by their sensitive bills.

One of the greatest natural spectacles in the world is far out of sight for the most of us. In this painting I wanted to show what it feels like to have a first ring seat here. Watching the fastest fish on the planet, reaching lengths of three meters or more, racing around you, changing from one incredible neon-colour to another one in a fraction of a second, while the silver ball of sardines spins round like a living tornado.
