Long ago millions of twait shad visited our Dutch river mouths to spawn. But they have vanished because of overfishing and pollution. Luckily it seems they are returning and spawning again. They are beautiful predatory fish, covered in scales that, when touched by the sun, shine in greens, blues and purples. Here two of them are fighting over a baby smelt.
