‘Sailing’

  • Only a few are left; a gang of sailfish diminished a once huge school of sardines.

    • In this painting I wanted to focus on the bizarre dorsal fin and the colours of the sailfish. The dorsal fin is usually folded back in a dorsal slit to reduce aerodynamic resistance. When the fish gets excited though, its normal dark looking dorsal fin extends fully and explodes in briljant combinations of purple, brown, black and blue. The rest of the sailfish can also change colours, quicker and more spectacular then any chameleon can. Within a second dark backs turn into blue-green, and silverwhite flanks turn into a bronze-brown with luminescent blue stripes.
