Before I start a new painting I first have to make sure that I have a good basic design of the animal.That basis must be both objectively realistic as well that I must like it. I distil my ideal, average supermodel from many different individuals. You might think a hawk is a hawk, but no: hawks are almost as different from each other as you and me. They come in all kinds of variations: dark, fat, ugly, beautiful, silly, you name it. My preference goes out to super healthy, super strong and super vigilant specimens, which is why I never base a painting on an animal in captivity. If you look closely you will see many differences….
